The Wine History of Napa Valley

Napa Valley is the famous California wine country. It is a place that is world renowned for its exceptional wines like cabernet and chardonnay. Because of it's reputation for producing best wines in the world, it’s very name 'Napa' has become so synonymous with fine quality wine. Napa Valley is located just northeast of San Francisco, between the Vaca Mountains to the east and the Mayacamas to the west. There are over 550 wineries in Napa Valley and they all share a rich history.

You Couldn't Ask for a Better Climate for Wine Grapes!

One of the greatest features of this part of California is its Mediterranean climate. The unique climate as we will see, this is a major reason why this area is so ideally suited when it comes to great production of wine grapes.

With Napa's Mediterranean climate is characterized by its warm, dry summers and cool, rainy winters. Its diverse range of soil types and terroir are perfect for wine grape cultivation, that causes more optimal ripening that happens during the growing season.

The Soil Types of Napa Valley

These soil types consists of volcanic, alluvial, sedimentary, and marine deposits. Each of these unique soil types create the various characteristics of the grapes, influencing their own distinct flavor profiles. These profiles are what  gives the wines their characteristic taste. Because of the unique patchwork of soils, and its unique terroir, early European settlers could see that wine grapes thrived there. George Yount, namesake of today’s Yountville, is credited being the to start planting grapes in 1839.

Where in the world do spices come from?

Farmers grow most spices in the tropics, such as North Africa, the Mediterranean, and Asia. Yet, people also find spices in the Americas. Each of these areas has its own unique climate needed to produce the spices. Popular global spices include black pepper, paprika, cumin, cloves, nutmeg, ginger, and cinnamon. The most expensive spices are saffron, cardamom, black cumin, fennel pollen, and vanilla.

People find turmeric in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Cloves have their origins in the Spice Islands of Indonesia. The flower of the Crocus sativus plant, from Iran, Spain, and India, produces saffron. Vanilla beans come from the pods of the Vanilla orchid that are native to Mexico. Yet vanilla is now grown in other tropical regions like Madagascar and Tahiti. Paprika is a spice. It comes from dried, ground red peppers, from chili peppers found in Central Mexico.
